Our Social Justice Committee: Dedicated

to Change Our World

Changing the World - UUFNBUUFNB’s Social Justice Committee is a group of passionate, committed members who work diligently to address bringing peace to our country, reducing global warming, and sharing information with our fellowship regarding justice issues within our community. With the leadership of our Social Justice Committee, the Fellowship wrote and passed a resolution for peace (copy follows). Since January, 2007, our committee has organized and participated in peace demonstrations in downtown Napa each fourth Sunday of the month.

Changing the World - UUFNBOne of our members, with the support of our committee, and in partnership with a person from our wider community has created, painted, and distributed more than 80 white crosses to homes throughout the city of Napa to represent our men and women killed in action in the Middle East.

UUFNB has associated with UULM (Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry-California) in many of their state-wide initiatives and continues to offer pre-service discussions and guests in the pulpit who address issues of peace, marriage equality, global warming, preserving democracy, and healthcare. UUFNB is now addressing a proposal to form “Carbon Rings.” groups that personally address what we can do to lessen or eliminate global warming. As members of UULM, our Congregation voted on and signed the “Amicus Brief,” presented to the California Supreme Court that led to legalizing same-sex marriage in California.

In addition to our Social Justice Committee, we have a “Soup and Bread” group that meets in members’ homes once a month where they discuss a reading about social justice issues. The larger fellowship contributes a portion of our Sunday collection to charitable organizations in our community every month.

All are welcome to join us! For more information, please contact Iris Daigre.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of North Bay Resolution for Peace

We, the members of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the North Bay assert peace, justice, and liberty for all living beings. We uphold the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Each is entitled to be treated with justice, equity, and compassion.

For these reasons:

  • We oppose the pre-emptive war initiated by the United States on Iraq. Although a rationale was presented, no “weapons for mass destruction” were found.
  • Using military force against another country, except in self-defense, is in opposition to the United Nations Charter and the law of the United States.
  • We grieve for those who have lost their lives, of whatever nationality, of whatever creed or religion, for those who are wounded as a result of war, and for the suffering of their families.
  • We honor and respect our soldiers for their courage and hard work. We seek to bring our soldiers home.
  • The huge cost of this war limit services needed by our citizenry and, do not provide sufficient funds for counter-terrorism, nor provide for medical care to heal the deep wounds of our soldiers.
  • We call upon Congress to vote to limit Presidential power making it impossible for pre-emptive strikes on other countries without approval by both Houses of Congress.

We call upon Congress to ban further use of taxpayer funds to promote this war against Iraq.
